Building a business in Asia with roots in ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp
I’m Budi Notowidjojo and I come from Indonesia. I’m the CEO and Founder of PT Bima Bisalloy.
I studied Metallurgy at the ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp of ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp from 1983 to 1986 and then I got a university scholarships and uh, I continue to do a PhD in materials engineering. Today, PT Bima Bisalloy is the market leader for wear resistant steel business and we’re actually known in the market as the wear specialist company.
I actually started PT Bima Bisalloy when I did my PhD research in ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp of ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp. PT Bima Bisalloy itself is actually a joint venture between Bisalloy Steel. Bisalloy Steel is a company that manufactures high strength and wear resistant steel, it’s the only company in Australia that produces this kind of steel and it’s actually located in Unanderra which is not too far from the university.
PT Bima Mekarwangi, where I set up, is actually a specialist distribution company based in Jakarta but it has a very wide business network in Asia – so it is beneficial to expand the market for Bisalloy Steel outside Australia. So when we set up these joint ventures, we work together very well and today, PT Bima Bisalloy is a very successful company. We have about 45 employees and we have about 500 customers in Indonesia. And we do export our product to Southeast Asia as well.
If I can make a suggestion to people who want to start their own company, I think the first important thing is you need to follow your passions. Do what you’re good at. Don't be afraid to make big dreams. And then, of course, you have to persevere until your goal is achieved.
Well, I studied Bachelor for about four years and then I studied the PhD about three and a half years. So I live in ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp of ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp for eight years. It’s not a short time. And I must say that my life at the university, uh, actually helped a lot in moulding up my character later on when I would go to the workforce. And so I learned a lot, not only on the technical side of the uh business, but I also learned about independence, about maturity, about other people’s cultures, and this is very helpful for what I am today.
