Alumni honoured for outstanding service and achievements
Australia Day Honours recognise contributions to defence, community and sport
Three ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp of ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp (UOW) graduates were recognised for their contributions and achievements in the 2025 Australia Day Honours List.
Captain Douglas John Griffiths RAN was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the Military Division for meritorious service to international engagement for the Australian Defence Force.
Ms Teresa Tran was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division for service to the Vietnamese community of Australia.
Mr Philip Driscoll was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division for service to sport through medical roles.
Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Eileen McLaughlin congratulated the recipients for their well-deserved recognitions.
“The ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp is extremely proud to be connected with all the UOW alumni who make up a long list of dedicated and inspiring individuals on the Australia Day Honours roll,” Professor McLaughlin said.
“It is through hard work and determination that Captain Griffiths, Ms Tran and Mr Driscoll have made such valuable contributions to their fields and communities. This is an exceptional recognition of their success and the lasting legacy it will leave.”
Captain Griffiths has displayed inspirational leadership, initiative and meritorious commitment to improving Australian Defence Force international relationships. His thoughtful, insightful and energetic engagement, spanning multiple operations and long-term representational postings, have delivered significant benefits to military operations.
Captain Griffiths has also enabled new opportunities for Australian defence industry and enhanced Australia’s Defence relationships and reputation as a capable and trusted partner.
Ms Tran has made an outstanding contribution to the Vietnamese community in ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp and in Australia. She has served as the Honorary Federal Treasurer of Vietnamese Community in Australia since 2000, and as President of Vietnamese Community in ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp since 1999.
She has also been a participant in ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp City Council’s ÁñÁ«ÊÓƵapp Living Books Program, and an active fundraiser in various local, interstate and international appeals. Ms Tran's husband, Hong-Phong Le, also received an OAM for service to the Vietnamese community of Australia in the 2025 Australia Day honours.
Mr Driscoll has made a valuable contribution to sport in the Illawarra over many decades. He has been head of medical services at the Illawarra Hawks in the National Basketball League since 1979.
He has also been a sports trainer with Sports Medicine Australia since 1984 and was a Community Sport Medical Advisory Working Group from 2019 to 2021.
He has been a sports trainer at St George Illawarra Dragons since 1999 and before that was a sports trainer for the Illawarra Steelers from 1993 to 1999.
